Formerly known (until 1934) as Tatar Pazardzhik. A city in the Plovdiv Oblast in southwestern Bulgaria. It lies on the Maritsa River, about 40 km upstream from Plovdiv. It is on the western edge of the Thracian Plain and is a centre for vegetable, flower, tobacco, grape and other fruit cultivation. Since 1488 it has been known as Tatar Pazardzhik in the Ottoman Empire, but remains of an ancient settlement dating back to around 2000 BC have been found within the city. The iconostasis of the Church of the Virgin Mary (1837) is particularly famous for its fine art. Population 87,227 (1991 estimate).
