McCullers, Carson
Born: February 19, 1917 in Columbus, Georgia
[Died] September 29, 1967, Nyack, New York. American female writer. In high school, she became an admirer of E. O'Neill and began writing plays and novels. After studying at the Juilliard School, she gained widespread recognition as a talented budding writer with her debut novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1940), which depicts lonely people searching for love, with a deaf-mute protagonist. Her next work, Reflections in a Golden Eye (41), which deals with a bizarre murder case among soldiers stationed in the South, was The Member of the Wedding (46), which beautifully depicts the delicate psychological nuances of an adolescent girl as she reacts to her brother's marriage, and was well received. It was dramatized by the author (50) and made into a film. His other works include The Ballad of the Sad Café (51), a collection of short and medium-length stories, The Square Root of Wonderful (58), and a novel, Clock Without Hands (61). Due to rheumatism, he was wheelchair bound from the age of 29 until his death.
