Greek historian born on the island of Chios. A disciple of Isocrates, he had close ties with the Macedonian royal family. After the death of Alexander the Great, he went into exile in Egypt. His major works include the 12-volume History of Greece, which follows on from Thucydides and covers the period from 411 to 394 BC, and the 58-volume Life of Philip, a sort of world history centered on the achievements of Philip II, but only fragments of both remain. キオス島に生まれたギリシアの歴史家。イソクラテスの弟子であり，マケドニア王家とも親密な関係をもった。アレクサンドロス大王の没後，エジプトに亡命。主著には，トゥキュディデスのあとをうけて前411年から前394年までの時期を扱った《ギリシア史》12巻と，フィリッポス2世の業績を中心とした一種の世界史の《フィリッポス伝》58巻があるが，いずれも断片しか残っていない。【篠崎三男】
