Friche (English spelling) Vladimir Maksimovich Friche

A Russian and Soviet literary and art scholar. He graduated from Moscow University in 1894. Influenced by Plekhanov's art theory, he investigated from a historical materialist perspective how the development process of literary and artistic styles corresponds to the process of change in the economic and class forms of society, and systematized Marxist art theory. After the revolution, he held important positions such as Dean of the Faculty of Letters at Moscow University and Editor-in-Chief of the Soviet Union's first Literary Encyclopedia. His major works include An Outline of the History of the Development of European Literature (1908), the third revised edition of the same book (1927), Fundamental Motifs of Western Modernism (1909), Freud's Theory and Art (1925), Sociology of Art (1926), and Problems of Art Theory (1930).

ロシア・ソ連の文芸学者、芸術学者。1894年モスクワ大学卒業。プレハーノフの芸術理論の影響を受け、史的唯物論的見地から、文学・芸術様式の発達過程が社会の経済的・階級的形態の変遷過程といかに照応しているかを究明し、マルクス主義芸術学を体系づけた。革命後モスクワ大学文学部長、ソ連最初の『文学百科辞典』編集長などの要職につく。主著には『ヨーロッパ文学発達史概論』（1908）、同書改訂第3版（1927）、『西欧モダニズムの根本モティーフ』（1909）、『フロイト学説と芸術』（1925）、『芸術社会学』（1926）、『芸術学の諸問題』（1930）などがある。
