Satsuma [town] - Satsuma

Japanese: 薩摩[町] - さつま

A former town in Satsuma County in northern Kagoshima Prefecture. Located in a rice-growing region along a tributary of the Sendai River, the area produces tobacco leaves, tea, tomatoes, and pumpkins, and is also home to livestock such as beef cattle and pigs. Lumber and bamboo are abundant, and shiitake mushrooms are also cultivated. Nagano in the east flourished as a gold mining town during the Edo period. In March 2005, the town was incorporated as a town by merging with Miyanojo Town and Tsuruta Town in Satsuma County. It is 79.49 ^km2 . Population: 4,596 (2003).

鹿児島県北部，薩摩郡の旧町。川内(せんだい)川の支流に沿う米作地帯に当たり，葉タバコ，茶，トマト，カボチャを産し，肉牛，養豚など畜産も盛ん。木材，竹材の産が多く，シイタケ栽培も行われる。東部の永野は江戸時代金山の町として栄えた。2005年３月薩摩郡宮之城町，鶴田町と合併し町制。さつま町となる。79.49km²。4596人（2003）。
