A former town in Satsuma County in northern Kagoshima Prefecture. Located in a rice-growing region along a tributary of the Sendai River, the area produces tobacco leaves, tea, tomatoes, and pumpkins, and is also home to livestock such as beef cattle and pigs. Lumber and bamboo are abundant, and shiitake mushrooms are also cultivated. Nagano in the east flourished as a gold mining town during the Edo period. In March 2005, the town was incorporated as a town by merging with Miyanojo Town and Tsuruta Town in Satsuma County. It is 79.49 km2 .
