A village in Iwate County, northwest of Iwate Prefecture. Population 6,925 (1995). Hachimantai to the northwest and Mt. Iwate to the south rise up, and the Aka River and Matsukawa River flow eastward, originating from these mountain ranges. Matsuo Mine, Japan's largest sulfur mine, is located at the southeastern foot of Mt. Chausu in the Hachimantai volcanic group. Refined sulfur and iron sulfide ore were transported from the mining village's yashikidai, but it closed in 1969. When the mine was in operation, wastewater flowed into the Matsukawa River, and even stained the riverbed of the main Kitakami River brown. The vast former mine site has been turned into a school and residential area. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
