A Japanese scholar born in Russia. He studied Japanese literature at Tokyo Imperial University for six years from 1908, and was friends with Natsume Soseki. After returning to Japan, he fled to Finland when the Russian Revolution occurred, and in 1921 he moved to Paris, becoming a naturalized French citizen in 1931. He edited the magazine Japan and the Far East, and contributed to the introduction of Japanese culture. From 1932 he taught Japanese language and Japanese history at Harvard University, building the foundation for subsequent Japanese studies in the United States. ロシア生れの日本学者。1908年から6年間東京帝国大学国文科で学び,夏目漱石とも親交があった。帰国してロシア革命が起きるとフィンランドへ逃れ,1921年パリに出て,1931年フランスに帰化。雑誌《日本と極東》を編集して,日本文化の紹介に貢献した。1932年からはハーバード大学で日本語や日本の歴史などを教え,米国におけるその後の日本研究の礎を築いた。著書に《赤露の人質日記》(1921年)などがある。
