A former town in Yoshida County, northern Fukui Prefecture. The main settlement is located at the mouth of a valley where the Kuzuryu River flows into the Fukui Plain, and was a castle town for about 80 years in the early Edo period. From the Meiji period onwards, it developed as a silk and rayon weaving town. Weaving is the main industry, and it is famous as a producer of synthetic fibers. The Echizen Railway runs from Fukui City. In February 2006, it was incorporated into Kamishibe Village and Eiheiji Town in Yoshida County. 18.59 km2 . Population: 10,363 (2003). 福井県北部,吉田郡の旧町。主集落は九頭竜(くずりゅう)川が福井平野に出る谷口に位置し,江戸初期の約80年間,城下町であった。明治以降は絹・人絹の機業町として発展。織物業を主幹産業とし,合成繊維の産地として有名。福井市からえちぜん鉄道が通じる。2006年2月吉田郡上志比村と永平寺町へ編入。18.59km2。1万363人(2003)。
