In 1864, Nietzsche entered the University of Bonn and initially studied theology at his mother's request, but soon changed his major to classical philology, and then moved to the University of Leipzig when his teacher, Friedrich Ritschl (1806-76), was transferred there. In Leipzig, he discovered the philosophy of Schopenhauer and came into contact with the teachings of Wagner.
