Gorno-Badakhshan

An autonomous region in the southeastern part of the Republic of Tajikistan, Central Asia. Area: 63,700 ^km2 , population: 161,000 (1989). The region was established on January 2, 1925, and its capital is Khorugh. The inhabitants are Tajiks, Kyrgyzs, Russians, etc. It is located on the Pamir Plateau, which is home to the former Soviet Union's highest Komunist peak (7,495m), and borders China to the east and Afghanistan to the south and west. Grains, vegetables, and fruit are cultivated in the western Pamirs, while Kurdish sheep and yaks are raised in the eastern Pamirs.
