…Her name means “far-reaching woman.” According to the oldest document that mentions her, Hesiod’s Theogony, she was the daughter of the Titans Perses and Asteria (sister of Leto, mother of Apollo and Artemis), and was highly honored by Zeus, had authority over the heavens, the earth, and the sea, and bestowed good fortune in all circumstances on those who prayed to her. However, she was later associated with the underworld, and was considered a fearsome goddess who ruled over the night, magic, and transformation, carried a torch in her hand, and appeared at crossroads accompanied by the dogs of hell. …
