A plant of the genus Lily of the Amaryllidaceae family with fleshy, tuberous roots. It is widely cultivated in flower beds and for cut flowers. The genus is named after a friend of the botanist Linnaeus. There are about 60 species in South America, including Chile and Brazil, and starch is extracted from the swollen roots, which are sometimes used as food. It is usually planted in the spring and flowers in June and July. At first glance, it looks similar to the Japanese lily, and the plant height is 30 to 80 cm. The petals of the clustered flowers have various dark markings, and the flowers last long when cut, so breeding is also progressing. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
