A perennial vine of the Convolvulaceae family (APG classification: Convolvulaceae). Native to eastern Mexico, it grows in mountainous areas at altitudes of 1,600 to 2,700 meters. It is widely cultivated in the vicinity of Jalapa Enrìquez, Mexico, as well as in Jamaica and India. The stems and undersides of the leaves are purple. The leaves are alternate, ovate, 9 cm long and 5 cm wide, with a pointed tip. The base of the leaves is arrowhead-shaped and has a long petiole. The corolla is reddish purple like a morning glory flower, 6 to 10 cm in diameter, and produces a single pedicel from the axil, which further divides into 2 to 3 pedicels, each of which produces one flower. The calyx has 5 lobes, and two parcels grow opposite each other at the bottom of the calyx. The tuberous root is thick and turnip-shaped, reaching a diameter of 10 to 15 cm. The tuberous root of the Japanese yarrow is used as a laxative. The active ingredient is the resin glycoside convolubrin (10-20%). The alcohol extract of the tuberous root is washed with water and the water-soluble components are removed to produce Japanese yarrow oil, which is also used as a laxative.
