A city in the northern part of Nagasaki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1955. It occupies the hills at the northern end of the Kita Matsuura Peninsula and the islands at the mouth of Imari Bay, facing the Genkai Sea. The Sasa River runs through the center of the city, with the central city of Sasa at its mouth, and the Matsuura Railway runs through it. In addition to rice, mandarin oranges and melons are cultivated. Yellowtail and sea bream are actively farmed along the coast. The fish market boasts an annual haul of about 100,000 tons, making it one of the largest in western Japan. Seafood processing is also popular. It developed as a coal mining town producing high-quality coal, but all the coal mines were closed by 1969. In 1990, Kyushu Electric Power completed a coal-fired power plant, and textile and machine factories are also located here. In January 2006, Takashima Town and Fukushima Town from Kita Matsuura County were incorporated. Area: 130.55 km2 .
