A group of languages that, together with Latin, form the Italic branch of the Indo-European language family. They exhibit linguistic characteristics different from Latin. Osci is centered in the Campania region of southern Italy, while Umbrian is spoken in the Umbria region. Both have inscriptions dating back to the Christian era, but the former can also be found in graffiti found in the ruins of Pompeii, which was buried by an earthquake. With the rise of the Roman Empire, the languages of these small tribes were absorbed into Latin. [Kazama Kiyozo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
