...Through the multi-party system and the affluent welfare society, the three sectarian parties, the Catholic People's Party, the Anti-Revolutionary Party, and the Christian Historical Union, concerned by the gradually weakening influence of churches and religions, formed a united parliamentary group in 1973 as the Christian Democratic Union (CDA). In the 1977 election, the Labor Party became the largest party, but did not gain a majority, and a CDA-VVD coalition government was formed, headed by Andreas AMvan Agt (1931- ), the second largest party of the CDA. In the 1981 election, the CDA became the largest party, but even with the VVD it did not gain a majority, and the situation became even more divided into small parties. ...
