In 1936, he signed a contract with Samuel Goldwyn and produced many popular films in a wide range of genres, including The Three Men (1936), an adaptation of playwright Lillian Hellman's debut novel The Children's Hour (also made into a film in 1961 and released in Japan under the title The Two Men), Mrs. Peacock (1936), an adaptation of Sinclair Lewis' best-selling novel, The Dead End (1937), an adaptation of Sidney Kingsley's hit stage play, Wuthering Heights (1939), an adaptation of Emily Bronte's novel, A Woman in the Moonlight (1940), an adaptation of Somerset Maugham's novel The Letter, and the literary film The False Garden (1941), an adaptation of Lillian Hellman's stage play The Little Foxes, as well as the excellent Western The Western Man (1940). The person who played the greatest role in shaping Wyler's "style," known as "the perfectionist," was cameraman Gregg Toland (1909-48), who collaborated with him on many of his films after "The Three Men."
