The correct name is o (ortho)-methoxyphenol or 2-methoxyphenol. It is obtained by dry distillation of guaiac resin, hence the common name. It is also found in beech tar. It is a slightly yellowish white crystal with a peculiar odor. It is produced from 1,2-dihydroxybenzene (commonly known as catechol) and o -methoxyaniline (commonly known as o -anisidine). It is used to produce the fragrance vanillin. It is only slightly soluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents.

正しくはo(オルト)-メトキシフェノールあるいは2-メトキシフェノールという。グアヤック樹脂の乾留によって得られたのでこの慣用名がある。またブナの木(もく)タール中にも含まれる。特異臭のあるやや黄みを帯びた白色の結晶。1,2-ジヒドロキシベンゼン(慣用名カテコール)やo-メトキシアニリン(慣用名o-アニシジン)から製造される。香料のバニリンの製造に利用される。水にはわずかにしか溶けないが、有機溶媒に溶ける。
