A medieval samurai family from Sagami. A branch of the Kamakura faction of the Kanmu Heishi clan, and of the same clan as the Oba clan. Also written as Matano. Their base was in Matano-go, Oba Mikuriya, Koza County, Oba (present-day Oba, Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture). The family began to take the name Matano at the end of the Heian period when Oba Kagechika's younger brother, Kagehisa (Hisashi), took the name. The Oba clan was originally vassals of the Minamoto clan, but after the Heiji Rebellion (1159), both Kagechika and Kagehisa joined the Taira clan. Kagechika was defeated in the Battle of Ishibashiyama (1180) and was beheaded, while Kagehisa fled to Kyoto, but died before 1195 (Kenkyu 6).
