Mata Hari

A Dutch dancer known as a beautiful female spy. Her real name was Margaretha Geertruida Zelle. Born in Leeuwarden, she married a Dutch military officer named MacLeod and traveled to Borneo, Sumatra, and Java. After returning to Europe, she distinguished herself in a high-class brothel in Paris, and then made her debut as an Indian dancer under the name Mata Hari (meaning "sun" in Malay), becoming a sensation in Paris on the eve of World War I. During the war, she was arrested on suspicion of working as a spy for Germany in collaboration with a former high-ranking conman named the Marquis de Montesac, sentenced to death, and shot to death in Vincennes on the early morning of October 15, 1917.

美貌の女スパイとして知られるオランダのダンサー。本名はツェレMargaretha Geertruida Zelle。レーウワルデンに生まれ，オランダ軍将校マクレオドの妻となって，ボルネオ，スマトラ，ジャワを転々とした。帰欧後パリの高級娼館で頭角を現してから，マタ･ハリ(マレー語で〈太陽〉の意という)の名でインド舞踊のダンサーとしてデビューし，第1次大戦前夜のパリで一世を風靡した。大戦中モンテサック侯爵と名のる元高等詐欺師と組んでドイツ側のスパイとして活動した容疑で逮捕され，死刑を宣告されて，1917年10月15日未明バンセンヌで銃殺された。
