1876‐1917 A Dutch dancer known as a beautiful female spy. Her real name was Margaretha Geertruida Zelle. Born in Leeuwarden, she married a Dutch military officer named MacLeod and traveled to Borneo, Sumatra, and Java. After returning to Europe, she distinguished herself in a high-class brothel in Paris, and then made her debut as an Indian dancer under the name Mata Hari (meaning "sun" in Malay), becoming a sensation in Paris on the eve of World War I. During the war, she was arrested on suspicion of working as a spy for Germany in collaboration with a former high-ranking conman named the Marquis de Montesac, sentenced to death, and shot to death in Vincennes on the early morning of October 15, 1917.
