Kato Shundai

Japanese:
Kato Shundai
Year of death: March 18, 1877
Year of birth: 1802
A potter in Seto during the late Edo period. Born into a family that owned Akatsu pottery, his childhood name was Soshiro. He excelled in pottery from an early age, and in 1816, at the age of 15, he succeeded his father Keisen and participated in the Ofukai ware production. When he was around 30 years old, he was bestowed the name "Shundai" by Tokugawa Nariharu, the 11th lord of Owari (Nagoya) domain. While Kato Tamikichi founded porcelain in Seto, Shundai, who protected pottery, added akae, Oribe, and Shino techniques to traditional Seto ware, and was also skilled in the so-called straw-dye technique, which involves painting the pottery body with red, white, and black underglaze paint. In Seto ware, traditional traditional pottery is called the "main profession," and Shundai is one of the last master craftsmen of this type. He wrote "Shundai (signature)" on his works and took pride in being a traditional craftsman.
