First generation

(1643-1703) was a former Nichiren sect priest who used the Buddhist name Rokyu and was skilled in street talk (street tales). For about 30 years around the time of the Kanbun, Enpo, Tenna, Jokyo, and Genroku eras (1661-1704), he was popular for his street storytelling at places such as Gion Maguzugahara and Shijogawara in Kyoto, and Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. He left behind such works as "Stories about dew" (1691), "New light-hearted stories about dew" (1698), "New stories about Gorobei dew" (1701), "Stories about dewy holidays" (around 1702), and "Souvenirs from dewy holidays" (1707), and is said to be the founder of Kamigata tanashi.

2nd Generation

(1932-2009) His real name was Aketagawa Ichiro. In 1947 (Showa 22), he became the apprentice of Katsura Harudanji 2. After working as Katsura Shunbo and Katsura Koharudanji, he took on the stage name of Tsuyu no Goro 2 in 1968. He specialized in ghost stories and stories of human interest. He has written many books, including "Naniwabashizukushi." He was president of the Kamigata Rakugo Association from 1994 (Heisei 6) to 2003. He was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2000. In 2005, he took on the stage name of Gorobei 2.

初代

(1643―1703)もと日蓮(にちれん)宗の僧で、露休(ろきゅう)という僧名を用い、辻(つじ)談義(辻咄(ばなし))を得意とした。寛文(かんぶん)・延宝(えんぽう)・天和(てんな)・貞享(じょうきょう)・元禄(げんろく)(1661~1704)のころ約30年にわたって、京都の祇園真葛ヶ原(ぎおんまぐずがはら)や四条河原(しじょうがわら)、北野天満宮などで辻咄を演じて人気があった。『露がはなし』(1691)、『露新軽口ばなし』(1698)、『露五郎兵衛新ばなし』(1701)、『露休(ろきゅう)ばなし』(1702ころ)、『露休置土産(みやげ)』(1707)などの著書を残し、上方(かみがた)咄の祖といわれる。

2代

(1932―2009)本名明田川一郎。1947年(昭和22)2代桂春団治(はるだんじ)に入門。桂春坊、桂小春団治を経て1968年2代露の五郎襲名。怪談や人情咄を得意とした。『なにわ橋づくし』ほか、著作も多数ある。1994年(平成6)~2003年まで上方落語協会会長。2000年紫綬褒章(しじゅほうしょう)受章。2005年2代目五郎兵衛を襲名。
