A type of automatic typecasting machine. Invented by the American Tolbert Lanston in 1885, it casts type one piece at a time, whereas the Linotype casts a line of type at a time. There are manual and automatic types, and the typecasting capacity for Japanese characters is around 40 characters per minute for the manual typecasting machine and around 100 characters per minute for the automatic typecasting machine. The capacity for Western characters is around 150 characters. With the automatic typecasting machine, holes are punched in the tape using a keyboard, and the tape is placed on a caster (typecasting machine), and the required matrix is extracted by a mechanical selection device for casting and typesetting. Now that offset printing has become mainstream, it has fallen into decline due to the spread of computerized typesetting.

活字自動鋳植機の一種。1885年米国のランストンTolbert Lanstonが発明したもので，ライノタイプが１行分の活字をまとめて鋳造するのに対し，１個（モノ）ずつ活字を鋳造する。手動式と自動式があるが，鋳植能力は和文の場合，手動式で毎分40字前後，自動式で毎分100字前後。欧文モノタイプでは150字前後の能力がある。自動式では，キーボードによってテープに穴をあけ，これをキャスター（活字鋳植機）にかけると，機械的な選択装置により所要の母型がとり出されて，鋳造と植字が行われた。オフセット印刷が主流となった現在は，電算植字法の普及により衰微した。
