Song-playing picture

Japanese:
Song-playing picture
These are pictorial depictions of poets and themes of their poems, and were created during the popularity of poetry contests. Like the paintings of immortal poets, they are thought to have been created from a fairly early period, and the Satake version of the Thirty-six Immortal Poets Scroll can also be considered a type of poetry contest, as the immortal poets are divided into two groups and a fictitious poetry contest of 18 numbers is held. The Ise New Famous Places Poetry Contest Scroll from 1295 (Einin 3) depicts the new famous places in Ise, which became the subject of the poetry contest, and is notable as an example of the adoption of the tradition of famous place paintings into the style of poetry contest paintings. However, the mainstream of poetry contest paintings are works depicting the figures of poets, and various ideas were created, such as the "Era of Poetry Contest Paintings," which select and combine famous poets from past and present, the "Artisan Poetry Contest Paintings" (Artisan-Zukushi-e), in which poetry contests are held with various craftsmen as substitutes, and the "Genji Poetry Contest Painting Scroll," which combines characters from stories.
