Rain typhoon - Ame taifū

Japanese: 雨台風 - あめたいふう

A slang term for a typhoon that causes relatively little damage from wind but much damage from rain. There is no strict definition. In general, typhoons in the rainy season and autumn cause more damage from rain than from wind. Typical examples of rain typhoons include the Kathleen Typhoon, which brought heavy rain to the Kanto and Tohoku regions on September 14-15, 1947, and caused unprecedented flooding in Tokyo and Saitama Prefecture by breaking the levees of the Tone River and Arakawa River, and the Kanogawa Typhoon, which brought heavy rain to the Tokai and Kanto regions on September 26-28, 1958, flooding the Kano River, killing more than 1,000 people in the Izu region, and causing major damage such as flooding and landslides in Kanagawa Prefecture and Tokyo.

風による被害は比較的小さく，雨による被害が大きい台風の俗称。厳密な定義はない。一般に，梅雨期や秋季の台風は風よりも雨による被害が大きい。1947年9月14～15日に関東・東北地方に大雨を降らせ，利根川と荒川の堤防の決壊により東京都，埼玉県に未曾有の大水害を起こしたカスリン台風や，1958年9月26～28日に東海・関東地方で大雨をもたらして狩野川を氾濫させ，伊豆地方で 1000人をこえる死者を出したほか，神奈川県，東京都でも浸水，崖崩れ等の大きな被害をもたらした狩野川台風は，雨台風の代表的なものである。
