An inlet in ancient Naniwa. The name probably comes from the fact that it was the residence of the Azumi clan, Tomonomiyatsuko of Amabe. According to the Shoku Nihongi, Emperor Shomu, who was staying in Naniwa, made a visit to the Azumi River in February 744. There are several theories about the location of the Azumi River, including the Higashiyokobori River flowing through Osaka City, based on the fact that a document from Shiragie-sho in 750 states "East Azumi River, South Horie River," the area near Tenmabashi Bridge on the Yodo River (Kita-ku and Chuo-ku, Osaka City) based on the inscription on the bell of Ansho-ji Temple in Yamashina-ku, Kyoto City, which reads "Watanabe Azumi-ji Temple," the area near Nozaki-cho in Kita-ku based on the fact that the 1886 Osaka survey map shows the place name "Ado-e," and the area near Andoji-cho in Chuo-ku, which is considered to be a transformation of the place name.
