The chemical formula is (CH 3 ) 4 Si. It is abbreviated as TMS. It is a colorless, volatile liquid with a boiling point of 26-27°C. It is extremely stable chemically and is not decomposed by concentrated sulfuric acid or concentrated alkali. The chemical shifts of the 1 H and 13 C nuclei are not easily affected by the solvent effect (the effect of the solvent on the reaction rate and equilibrium in a liquid phase reaction), and are less likely to overlap at high magnetic fields than the chemical shifts of the 1 H and 13 C nuclei of other compounds. A small amount of TMS is added to a nuclear magnetic resonance sample solution as an internal standard, and the chemical shift expressed in ppm is called the δ value.
