...an ethnic group living in the central Caucasus, which constitutes the Republic of North Ossetia in the Russian Federation and the South Ossetia Autonomous Oblast in the Republic of Georgia. In Russian they are called Osetins, and they call themselves Yilon or Digoron. Their population is 598,000 (1989).
