Japanese: ヘビトンボ(蛇蜻蛉) - ヘビトンボ（英語表記）dobsonfly

A general term for insects belonging to the family Corydalidae in the order Neuroptera, or one of these species. These insects are large, with a wingspan of 5-17.5cm, and are yellowish brown or dark brown overall. Although their name sounds like they are dragonflies, they belong to a completely different taxonomic group. They are distributed from the tropics to temperate zones, and about 100 species have been recorded. Only five species are known in Japan, and adults appear near river basins from May to September, are active at night, and often fly to lights. The adult lifespan is short, about a few days to 10 days.
