Kuzuryu River

Japanese:
Kuzuryu River

A river that flows through northern Fukui Prefecture. It is a first-class river. It originates at Aburazaka Pass, about 800 meters above sea level, on the border between Fukui and Gifu Prefectures, and flows west into Lake Kuzuryu (a dam lake). Kuzuryu Dam is a rockfill dam, second only to Miboro Dam, and contributes greatly to power generation, irrigation, and water control. The main stream joins the Itoshiro River downstream at Asahi in Ono City, flows north or west, bypasses Mt. Arashima, joins the Uchinami River at Kadohara, and enters the Ono Basin. Here it joins the Mana River, flows further north, enters the Katsuyama Basin, joins the Takinami River, flows west, and emerges into the Fukui Plain near Naruka-sanka. Here it flows westwards forming a gentle alluvial fan, joining the Hino River flowing from the south, and below it forms an extremely flat deltaic floodplain before emptying into the Sea of Japan at Mikuni Port. It is 116 km long, with a drainage area of 2,930 square km. It is the "mother river" that made a major contribution to the formation of the Fukui Plain's grain belt. The upper reaches of the Kuzuryu Gorge are rich in scenic beauty, and the scenery around Hotokehara is particularly magnificent. In addition to being an important power source, the upper reaches are also a treasure trove of forestry and mineral resources.
