Pope of the Roman Empire. Reigned 1492-1503. Born Rodrigo Borgia. Appointed cardinal at the age of 25 by his uncle, Pope Callixtus III, he expanded his influence within the papacy during the reign of Paul II (1464-71). He orchestrated the election of Sixtus IV, winning his own election through powerful bribery. His policies as pope were determined by his favoring of the Borgia family, of which he was a descendant, and especially their son Cesare Borgia. His political tactics won him the praise of Machiavelli as a model for Renaissance rulers.

ローマ教皇。在位1492‐1503年。本名ロドリゴ･ボルジアRodrigo Borgia。叔父教皇カリストゥス3世により25歳で枢機卿に任命され，パウルス2世時代(1464‐71)に教皇庁内で勢力を拡大し，シクストゥス4世の教皇選挙を画策し，自分は強力な贈賄によって当選した。教皇としての施策は出身たるボルジア家，とくにその子チェーザレ･ボルジアへの優遇から決定され，その権謀術数はルネサンス期支配者の模範としてマキアベリの賞賛をえた。
