Mazar-i Sharif

Japanese: マザーリ･シャリーフ（英語表記）Mazār‐i Sharīf

The largest city in the Afghan Turkestan region in northern Afghanistan, and the capital of Balkh Province. Population 128,000 (1990). In the 15th century, during the reign of Sultan Husayn (1470-1506) of the Timurid dynasty, the tomb of the fourth caliph (first Shiite imam) Ali was discovered here, and a mausoleum was built. This tomb was called Mazar-i-Sharif (Tomb of the Saint), and became a place of pilgrimage for both Sunni and Shiite believers. A temple town developed around the tomb, and it replaced Balkh.

アフガニスタン北部，アフガン･トルキスタン地方第1の都市で，バルフ州の州都。人口12万8000(1990)。15世紀，ティムール朝のスルターン･フサイン(在位1470‐1506)の治世に，第4代カリフ(シーア派の初代イマーム)アリーの墓がここで発見されたといわれ，墓廟が建てられた。それがマザーリ･シャリーフ(聖者の墓)と呼ばれ，スンナ派，シーア派両派の信者の参詣の対象となり，門前町が発達し，バルフに取って代わった。
