… Fantasy is the essence of British children's literature, and after that, such masterpieces as P. Pearce's Tom in the Midnight Garden (1958), LM Boston's Green Knowe series (1954-76), R. Hoban's The Adventure of the Mouse and His Son (1967), A. Garner's works based on Welsh legends (1960-), and W. Mayne's The Vanishing Drummer (1966) were produced, and the 1950s and 60s saw the rise of fantasy. In 1972, Adams wrote the animal fantasy Watership Down. Adventure novels also developed through J. Masefield to A. Ransome's The Adventures of a Yachting Vacation (1930-47). …
