A general term for the huge number of pamphlets and handbills published in France for propaganda purposes during the Fronde (1648-53). The name "Mazarinades" (Mazarinite) arose from the fact that most of the pamphlets were anti-Mazarin, criticizing and slandering the Italian Cardinal J. Mazarin, who held real political power under the minor King Louis XIV, but they also included many works that slandered the Queen Mother Anne of Austria and Prince Condé. In terms of format, in addition to direct accusations, they were diverse, including rhymes, rakugo, folk songs, and plays, and many were unsigned, but well-known authors such as Scalon, Guy Patin, Guy Joly, and Patru were among those who took an anti-Mazarin stance.
