A former town in Minamitakaki County, eastern Shimabara Peninsula, Nagasaki Prefecture. Located on a gentle slope southeast of the Unzen volcano, the town produces tobacco leaves, fruit trees, and vegetables, and also engages in livestock farming. Fishing is also thriving. The Shimabara Railway runs through the town. In March 2006, the town merged with the towns of Katsusa, Kuchinotsu, Minamiarima, Kitaarima, Nishiarie, Arie, and Fukae in Minamitakaki County to become Minamishimabara City. Area 10.51 km2 . 長崎県島原半島東部,南高来(みなみたかき)郡の旧町。雲仙火山南東の緩斜面が広がり,葉タバコ,果樹,蔬菜を産し,畜産も行う。漁業も盛ん。島原鉄道が通じる。2006年3月,南高来郡加津佐町,口之津町,南有馬町,北有馬町,西有家町,有家町,深江町と合併し市制,南島原市となる。10.51km2。5091人(2003)。
