Singspiel - Singspiel (English spelling) German

It means "musical drama." It is a type of opera that was performed in Germany from the late 18th century to the mid-19th century. Written in German, it often has a light and comical plot. A major feature of this type of opera is that, unlike regular opera, it often uses spoken dialogue.

In 1743, a German adaptation of the English ballad opera Devil to Pay was performed in Berlin. Inspired by this, Johann Adam Hiller (1728-1804) composed a new work of the same name in 1766 and successfully performed it, and new Singspiels were performed all over Germany. After that, Singspiels developed under the influence of Italian opera buffa and French opera comique, and eventually Mozart's representative Singspiels such as Bastien and Bastienne (1766) and The Abduction from the Seraglio (1782) were created. However, by the mid-19th century, Singspiels were replaced by operettas and disappeared.
