Suwanosejima

Japanese: 諏訪之瀬島 - すわのせじま
Suwanosejima
A volcanic island in the central part of the Tokara Islands in southern Kagoshima Prefecture. It is an active volcano that is constantly under observation. It belongs to Toshima Village. The highest point is Ontake (796m). In Bunka 10 (1813), a large-scale eruption occurred, causing pyroclastic flows and lava flows. A mountain collapse also occurred, forcing all the island's residents to evacuate, and the island remained uninhabited until 1883. Since then, active volcanic activity has continued. There is little flat land, so the main industries are field farming and raising Japanese beef cattle. There are two ports, Motoura Port and Kiriishi Port. Regular ferries operate from Kagoshima Port. Area 27.66 km2 . Population 74 (2000).
