In 1390, Toki Yasuyuki was annihilated by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Toki Yoriyasu, a powerful elder statesman who founded the Muromachi Shogunate, died in 1390 at the age of 70. Yoshimitsu took advantage of this opportunity to overthrow the Toki clan, and of the three provinces that Yoriyasu's household held, allowed his adopted son Yasuyuki, who had succeeded him as head of the shugosho, to inherit Mino and Ise, but gave Owari to Yasuyuki's younger brother Mitsusada, provoking Yasuyuki. When Mitsusada, who was in Kyoto as Yasuyuki's deputy governor, went down to Owari the following year, Yasuyuki's cousin and son-in-law, Akinao, fought against Mitsusada, but Yasuyuki helped Akinao, and civil war continued in Mino and Owari. In April 1390, Yoshimitsu sent troops to suppress Yasuyuki, and the following year he defeated Yasuyuki and brought him down. According to the Meitokuki, Mitsusada had an ambition to become the head of the Toki clan in place of his brother, and this incident can be said to have been skillfully exploited by Yoshimitsu.

元中7＝明徳1 (1390) 年，将軍足利義満によって土岐康行が滅ぼされた事件。室町幕府創業の元老として勢力のあった土岐頼康が，元中4＝嘉慶1 (87) 年 70歳で死んだ。この機を利用して土岐氏打倒を企てた義満は，頼康所帯の守護職3ヵ国のうち，惣領を継いだ頼康養子康行には美濃，伊勢の継承を許し，尾張を康行の弟満貞に与え，康行を挑発した。康行の代官として京都にいた満貞が，翌年尾張に下ると，康行の従弟で娘婿の詮直が満貞を迎え討ち，詮直を康行が助けたため，これより美濃，尾張で内乱が続いた。元中6＝康応1 (89) 年4月義満は康行討伐の兵を送り，翌年康行を破り没落させた。『明徳記』によると，満貞は兄に代って土岐氏の惣領になろうとの野心をもっていたという。これを義満が巧みに利用した事件といえよう。
