A market mechanism is a system in which the price system for all goods and services is determined by the workings of supply and demand, and production, consumption, and distribution throughout the economy are adjusted according to that price system.Unlike a system in which the government consciously and systematically organizes the production and distribution of goods and distributes them through authoritative commands (a command economy), in the market mechanism, the economic problem of what, how much, and how to produce using given finite resources is solved by the choices of each economic entity, with prices as the medium.

需要と供給の働きによってすべての財やサービスの価格体系が決められ，その価格体系に応じて経済社会全体の生産，消費，分配が調整される機構を，マーケット･メカニズムまたは市場機構と呼ぶ。政府が意識的，計画的に物資の生産と流通を組織し，その配分も権威による指令によって遂行するシステム(指令経済)とは異なり，マーケット･メカニズムでは，与えられた有限の資源を用いて，何を，どれだけ，いかに生産するかという経済問題が，価格を媒介とする各経済主体の選択によって解決されている。
