A Soto sect temple in Atoda, Hon'yabakeimachi, Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture. The mountain name is Mount Girakusen. It enshrines stone arhat Buddhas. In 1338 (3rd year of Engen, 1st year of Ryakuo), Engan Shogaku saw the beautiful scenery of the huge rock caves in this area and likened it to Mount Girakusa (Mount Vulture Peak) in India, founded Chigo-ji Temple, and enshrined images of the Sixteen Arhats. In 1359 (Shohei 14, Enbun 4), the Chinese monk Gekiryu Kenjun also came to the mountain and together they created over 700 stone statues of Shaka, Manjusri, Fugen, the Ten Great Disciples, the Sixteen Arhats, the Five Hundred Arhats, the Four Heavenly Kings, and other figures, and the temple was renamed Girakkusan Rakanji. Later, Hosokawa Yoriyuki donated the Golden Relic Tower and the Suisho Relic Tower, and Zekkaichishin visited the temple and created the inscription on the tower. During the Keicho era (1596-1615), Denshuku carved a thousand Jizo statues under a large rock, and nearby is the Aonodomon Cave, which was excavated by Zenkai over a period of 30 years during the Kanpo era (1741-1744). The entire temple grounds are known for their beautiful scenery. [Toshiaki Hirai] [Reference] |Main hall.
