1882‐1973 Canadian politician. A member of the Liberal Party, he became the second prime minister of French descent. He served from 1948 to 1957. He was a university professor before becoming Minister of Justice in the WLM King government in 1941, and then Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1946. He assisted King in the accession of Newfoundland to Canada in 1949, and in the same year, he worked hard to reform the British North America Act, which made the Supreme Court of Canada the final court of appeal in Canada, replacing the British Privy Council. His time as prime minister is remembered as Canada's golden age after World War II. Yves Saint-LaurentFrench fashion designer. Born in Oran, Algeria, he moved to Paris in 1954 and started working at Dior. After Dior's sudden death in 1957, he rose to fame as the main designer at the store, and in 1958 created the trapeze line, which became a hit. However, while he was serving in the military, Marc Bohan took over his position at Dior, so in 1962 he went independent and opened his own haute couture store.
