[Golden Age]
The Tudor dynasty, which flourished throughout the 16th century, produced music-loving kings Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, ushering in the greatest golden age in the history of English music. Henry VIII favored composers such as R. Fayrfax (1464-1521) and W. Cornysh (c. 1468-1523), encouraging French chanson, which was popular at the time, and even composing his own music. In addition, with the establishment of the Church of England in 1534, a need arose for new church music, and composers such as J. Taverner (c. 1490-1545), T. Tallis, and C. Tye (c. 1500-c. 1572) composed services and anthems.
