A seaweed of the family Rhodomelaceae in the order Ceratophytes. It grows on rocks in the bathyal zone as disk-shaped rhizoids. It is black-purple in color, 5-15cm tall, and its cylindrical main axis branches out several times, with small branches growing densely on each branch. It turns yellowish brown when dried, but it is used to make an infusion with licorice in hot water as an exudate to kill roundworms. It is widely distributed from the southern tip of Wakayama to Kyushu, as well as the Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, the Indian Ocean, the west coast of the United States, Australia, and the Atlantic Ocean.
