Wacław Sieroszewski

1858‐1945
Polish novelist. As a young man, he participated in the socialist movement and was exiled to Siberia, which prompted him to publish novels and ethnological research on the Yakut and Tungus peoples. He came to Japan in 1903 and worked on Ainu research with ethnologist B. Piłsudski. He also contributed greatly to introducing Japan to Poland through short stories based on his research in Japan, such as "Yaoya Oshichi," and his travelogue of the Far East. His major work is "Beniowski" (1916). [Nishi Shigehiko]

ポーランドの小説家。若いころ社会主義運動に参加してシベリアに流され，これを契機としてヤクート族やツングース族を扱った小説や民族学的研究を発表。1903年に来日し，民族学者B.ピウスーツキとともにアイヌ研究を手がけたほか，《八百屋お七》など日本に取材した短編や極東旅行記によって日本を広くポーランドに紹介した功績は大きい。主要作品に《ベニョフスキ》(1916)がある。【西成彦】
