1858‐1945 Polish novelist. As a young man, he participated in the socialist movement and was exiled to Siberia, which prompted him to publish novels and ethnological research on the Yakut and Tungus peoples. He came to Japan in 1903 and worked on Ainu research with ethnologist B. Piłsudski. He also contributed greatly to introducing Japan to Poland through short stories based on his research in Japan, such as "Yaoya Oshichi," and his travelogue of the Far East. His major work is "Beniowski" (1916). [Nishi Shigehiko] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
