[Born] 1364. Cairo Died: February 9, 1442. Arab historian of the Mamluk period in Cairo. After serving as a judge, head of the Hakim Mosque, and a teacher at the Ashrafiyyah and Iqbāliyya schools in Cairo and Damascus, he began his career as a writer. His major works include al-Mawā`iẓ wa al-I`tibār fī Dhikr al-Khiṭaṭ wa al-Āthār (Lessons and Experiences Taught by Tales of New Territories and Ruins), which established the tradition of Egyptian topography, Kitāb al-Sulūk li-Ma`rifa Duwal al-Mulūk (A Journey of Knowledge through the Dynasties), a chronicle of the Ayyubid and Mamlūk dynasties, and Ighātha al-Umma (Salvation of Society).
