A mountain in the Bernese Oberland mountain range in the European Alps in south-central Switzerland. It is 3,970m above sea level. It was first climbed in 1858. In 1921, Maki Aritsune became the first Japanese to climb the northeast ridge. The north face is a rock wall 1,800m high, and is one of the most difficult climbing routes in the Alps.
