...His greatest achievement was perfecting the Shikatabanashi (a story of how to tell a story) using gestures and hands, which laid the foundation for Edo Rakugo in later generations, and he is said to be the father of Edo Rakugo. His best-known stories include the three volumes of Shikano Buzaemon Kudenbanashi (The Tales of Shikano) (1683) and the five volumes of Shika no Makifude (The Deer Scroll) (1686). He also wrote the five volumes of Edasangoju (The Coral Pearl) (1690), which he collaborated with Ishikawa Ryusen and others, and the five volumes of Tsuyu to Shikakakeaibanashi (Tsuyu to Shikakakeaibanashi) (1697), which he collaborated with Tsuyu no Gorobei and others. Although there is no detailed biography, he was exiled to Oshima in Izu for a verbal gaffe during the epidemic in Edo in 1693 (Genroku 6).

…最大の功績は身振り手振りによる〈仕方噺（しかたばなし）〉を完成し，後世の江戸落語の基盤を作ったところにあり，江戸落語の祖といわれる。咄本は《鹿野武左衛門口伝咄し》3巻(1683)，《鹿の巻筆》5巻(1686)がよく知られ，また石川流宣らとの合作《枝珊瑚珠（えださんごじゆ）》5巻(1690)，露の五郎兵衛らとの合作《露鹿懸合咄（つゆとしかかけあいばなし）》5巻(1697)などもある。詳しい伝記はわからないが，1693年(元禄6)の江戸における悪疫流行のおりに舌禍事件が生じ，伊豆の大島へ流罪となった。…
