Shimada [city] - Shimada

Japanese: 島田[市] - しまだ
Shimada [city] - Shimada
A city in central Shizuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1948. The city center is on the left bank of the Oi River, and together with Kanaya Town (now part of Shimada City) on the opposite bank, it was a prosperous post town at Oigawa Kawagoe on the Tokaido. The Tokaido Main Line runs through the city, and the Oigawa Railway branches off from it. After the Tokaido Line opened, the post town fell into disuse, but it became a timber distribution center for the upper reaches of the Oi River, and the lumber industry is thriving. It is also a trading center for tea produced in Makinohara in the southern part of the city, and in the plains, rice and lettuce are cultivated, as well as greenhouse cultivation. Industries such as pulp and paper, precision machinery, food, and electrical equipment are also carried out. In May 2005, Kanaya Town in Haibara District was incorporated. In April 2008, Kawane Town in Haibara District was incorporated. Fujisan Shizuoka Airport is located in the south, and the Shin-Tomei Expressway opened in 2012. The area is 315.70 km 2 . 102,760 (2010).
