Filioque (English spelling)

Japanese: フィリオクエ（英語表記）filioque

A Latin word meaning "from the Son" inserted into the Nicene Creed in relation to the emanations of the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Triune God in Christianity. In the Western Church, the Holy Spirit emanates from both the Father and the Son, and so the creed, which states only that "from the Father," was supplemented with the word "Filioque" from the early Middle Ages. It first appeared in documents at the Third Council of Toledo (589), but there is also a strong theory that it was added later. From around the 9th century, the Frankish Church inserted the word "Filioque" into the creeds used in liturgies.

キリスト教で三一神の第3のペルソナ(位格)である聖霊の発出をめぐって，ニカエア･コンスタンティノポリス信条に挿入された〈子からも〉を意味するラテン語。西方教会では聖霊が父と子の両者から発出するとして，〈父から出る〉とのみ記す信条に，中世初期から〈フィリオクエ〉を補っていた。文献上の初出は第3回トレド会議(589)であるが，これを後代の加筆とする説も有力。9世紀ごろからフランク教会では典礼中の信条に〈フィリオクエ〉を挿入していた。
