A Latin word meaning "from the Son" inserted into the Nicene Creed in relation to the emanations of the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Triune God in Christianity. In the Western Church, the Holy Spirit emanates from both the Father and the Son, and so the creed, which states only that "from the Father," was supplemented with the word "Filioque" from the early Middle Ages. It first appeared in documents at the Third Council of Toledo (589), but there is also a strong theory that it was added later. From around the 9th century, the Frankish Church inserted the word "Filioque" into the creeds used in liturgies. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
