The town's origins date back to 913, when Æthelflaed, daughter of Alfred the Great and known as "Lady of Mercia," built a castle there. With convenient land and water transport, it developed as a market town, and in 1206 King John made it an autonomous city. There are many historical buildings in the town, including St. Mary's Church, believed to have been founded by Æthelflaed, and Tudor-era timber-framed houses. …
