…Located along the River Saw, a tributary of the River Trent, the town has developed industries such as shoemaking since the 18th century, electrical machinery, vehicles, and salt production. The town's origins date back to 913, when Æthelflaed, daughter of Alfred the Great and known as "Lady of Mercia," built a castle there. With convenient land and water transport, it developed as a market town, and in 1206 King John made it an autonomous city. There are many historical buildings in the town, including St. Mary's Church, believed to have been founded by Æthelflaed, and Tudor-era timber-framed houses. …
